Safety Information


Fire Safety is done by people of all ages.

  • Don't Play with Fire: Never play with matches or a cigarrette lighter. They are not toys.
  • Check Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors warn you if a fire starts. Ask your parents to check the batteries and to dust the filter. Batteries should be changed every six months. If you hear a smoke detector go off, get out of the house immediately.
  • Fire Escape Plans: Talk about a fire escape plan with your family. Be sure to pick a meeting place outside the house. Be sure you know at least two ways out of your house.
    • Practice: Practice your escape plan so you will know what to do in case of a fire.
    • Check the door: Never open a door if it feels warm, the fire could be on the other side. Instead, open a window and yell for help.
    • Crawl down low: If you smell smoke, get on your hands and knees and crawl to the door. It's easier to breathe on the floor because you're under the smoke.
    • Don't Hide: Never try to hide from a fire under the bed or in a closet, it will make it harder for the firefighters to find and help you.
    • Call 9-1-1: Call 9-1-1 from a neighbor's house or a cell phone outside, do not stay inside a burning house to call 9-1-1.
  • Stop, Drop and Roll: If your clothes catch fire, don't run.
    • Stop: Stop right where you are.
    • Drop: Drop to the floor.
    • Roll: Roll on the ground until the flames go out.
  • Be Fire Smart: If there is a fire, get out of the house fast. Never stop to get your pets or favorite toys. Go to the meeting place you and your family picked out and practiced.
  • Firefighters are your friends: Never run away or hide from a fire fighter. Their gear makes them look scary, but don't be afraid. They are there to help you. Their gear is used to protect them from the smoke and fire.
