The Quin Family Thanks The Community

We would like to thank all those who assisted us Monday night with Michael's return home. The family was overwhelmed with the outpouring of concern, kindness and support offered us throughout the evening. Although we wish we could, there are too many of you to thank personally. Nevertheless, we are grateful for the respect shown Michael by Delta Airlines who rendered him special honors in Atlanta and in DC. We are grateful to Chief Lasher and the men and women of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority who hosted us and rendered honors at plane side. To the Marines from 8th and I and Michael's two roommates, Captain Josh Hand and Captain Gene Paul, thank you for delivering Michael to us with honor. We were also moved by the professionalism of the law enforcement escorts from Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties who delivered us safely home. To the many, many fire and rescue companies who rendered honors along the route home, or right here in Purcellville, your salutes were in accordance with your finest traditions of caring for a brother. To my Loudoun County Fire and Rescue service colleagues, thank you for your unwavering support. To the many individual men and women of law enforcement, who stood by the roadside and saluted (Brendan that meant so much) or followed along, thank you for the honor. And to the Red Knights and Patriot Guard, thank you for your care, consideration, and accompaniment for that long ride home. To the citizens of Purcellville, our Mayor and Council and the Purcellville Police Department, your demonstration of support for our family was simply overwhelming. There is nothing we can ever say or do that will adequately describe our emotions as we passed through this wonderful town. We wish we could hug and personally thank each and every one of you. Lastly, our special thanks to Chiefs Dryden and O'Brien and the members of the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Department, and Chief Curtis of the Purcellville Volunteer Rescue Company, who coordinated most of Monday's activity but more important have been with us and supporting us throughout this ordeal. Your care and concern for me and my family has brought us inestimable comfort. We are at a loss as to how to express our thanks. I have never been more proud of my association with any organization than I am of my association with you. This community has learned, once again, what a treasure we have in the volunteers who live and serve and care so much for others living this town. We will work to thank as many of you as we can going forward. Michael is home and that's a very comforting thing.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Capt. Michael Quin was laid to rest at Arlington
National Cemetery at ceremonies with full military honors last week.
The Quin family was surrounded by family, friends and neighbors during a
funeral mass and grave-side services. The night before, thousands turned out at the Purcellville Baptist Church to pay
their respects to the Quin family. Later, the community packed into
the Tabernacle for a "Celebration of Life" in honor of the hometown
Marine who lost his life in the crash of his UH-1 “Huey” helicopter last
month. A memorial website has been set up by friends. Visit www.michaelquin.com for a remembrance of a remarkable, loved, and sadly missed local hero.

Mayor Bob Lazaro administered the oath of office to the leadership of the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company at its 88th annual banquet. Sworn in as Fire Chief was Bob Dryden, a veteran of PVFC. He was elected by the members of the company to lead the volunteer fire fighters for a two year term. This year's banquet was a "homecoming" of sorts for the members of the company. Held at the historic Tabernacle in Purcellville, a facility the fire company once owned. Construction and other factors meant the members of the fire company were unable to use the facility for the last several years.PVFC membership now tops 100 volunteers, who serve the town of Purcellville and the surrounding area. More photos can be found by going to the Photo Albums tab on the left panel....

Thanks for Supporting Our Annual Christmas Tree Sale Fund Raiser

Thanks for making our Christmas Tree Sales Fund Raiser a success this year! In the weeks prior to Christmas, we sold 850 Christmas Trees to our neighbors and friends in one of our most important fund raising events. Large and small, the trees sold at a pace that rivaled years' past. Wreaths and roping were the first to be sold out, followed by our special, first in a series Christmas Ornaments. Funds raised from the sale go to help defray costs associated with operating the volunteer fire company -- fuel for our trucks, equipment for our firefighters and for apparatus. We could not exist without the generous support of our community. Thank You....

Annual Neighborhood Fund Drive

Eighty eight years ago, a small group of citizens established The Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company (PVFC) following a series of disastrous fires, which virtually wiped out the business district. The Fire Company was comprised of volunteers — farmers, laborers, professionals, neighbors all — who gave of their time and talents to protect their community and make it a better place to live, work and raise a family.Today, things haven’t changed much — except that the community has grown and prospered and the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company has grown from a handful of citizens to more than 100 strong.

But one thing remains, the men and women of the your local Fire Company are your neighbors who give of their time and talent to protect our community. During the day, they work as mechanics and technicians, business owners and teachers — just like you. They help make up the fabric of this place we call home— Purcellville.

Now, we need your help. The money required to keep the volunteer protection in our community continues to increase. The cost of fuel for our fire trucks, to heat and keep the lights on at the Safety Center, the cost for protective wear for our firefighters and all the other expenses related to operating a first class fire protection service, is paid for by the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company.

We raise funds throughout the year through various methods and events. For example, our Christmas Tree sales generate money to help defray operating costs. And while the county and town provide some financial assistance, we still need to turn to our neighbors for their support through our Annual Neighborhood Fund Drive. Please consider making a generous donation today. You can mail a check to: Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 386, Purcellville, VA 20134, or make a secure donation online with your credit card by using PayPal.Thank you for your continued support....

Blues N BBQ Event Draws Hundreds to Safety Center

If there’s one thing for certain, when you combine barbeque,
blues music and a good cause, you’ll attract hundreds of local residents. And, that’s exactly what happened last
Saturday as more than 450 people turned out for the Blues N BBQ event at the
Purcellville Safety Center.

Hosted by the Restored Life Fellowship Church, the event was
for the benefit of the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company and the Purcellville
Volunteer Rescue Squad. Although
admission was free, contributions received during the event will go to help
defray expenses incurred by the volunteer fire and rescue organizations as they
protect the community.

Music was provided by the Gary Smallwood Band, a local group
that has gained acclaim for its blues music.
Food was prepared by members of the church and included pulled pork –
some 300 pounds of it – hot dogs, beans and other summer barbeque favorites.

During a break in the music, members of the Purcellville
Volunteer Fire Company and the Purcellville Volunteer Rescue Squad were honored
with a round of applause.

In attendance were Purcellville Mayor Bob Lazaro, Loudoun
County Supervisor Jim Burton, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Chief Keith
Brower, Loudoun Circuit Court Clerk Gary
Clemens and town council members.

Town Recognizes New Vounteer Firefighters

Fourteen new volunteer firefighters were
recognized by the Purcellville Town Council at its meeting recently.

Recognized by the Mayor and
Council for their accomplishment were: Alex Bennett, Conor Cosgrove, Cyrus
Dennis, Joshua Kyriazi, Grant Marshall, Ashlynne Meiklejohn, Tyler Moxley,
Jackson Page, Brandon Powell, Stephanie Salomon, Jamie Stephens, Pierce Taylor,
Stephanie Yocum and Lisa Braun.

The new volunteer firefighters have committed
over 160 hours of basic firefighting training – either through the County every
weekend for one whole day and two nights each week for 5 months to complete the State and County mandated
requirements for firefighters.

In addition to mastering basic firefighting
skills, they also concluded specialized training in vehicle extraction and
rescue, LP gas emergencies, and emergency firefighter extrication techniques.
All of this is in addition to approximately 40 hours of Company-required
training prior to fire school and
additional required County training in hazardous materials operations.

Company 2 has added 49 new certified volunteer
firefighters to its rolls since 2007, with an additional 13 recruits currently
in or about to begin fire training in this year’s cycle.

All of these firefighters are assigned to a
duty crew and have been operating as a member of that crew since their
induction to the Company many months ago, helping to provide 24/7 professional
firefighting coverage for our community. They join a volunteer Company now over
100 members strong, providing over 35,000 volunteer hours in duty crew time per
year alone (excluding training hours noted above), serving the Town of
Purcellville and outlying areas. Those
hours translate into a savings of about $2.8 million in salaries and benefits
based on the compensation package of an entry level firefighter in this
County.
